John Kander and Fred Ebb, the legendary songwriting team behind hits like "Cabaret" and "Chicago," composed the music and lyrics, infusing the musical with a blend of haunting melodies and pointed social commentary. The musical debuted Off-Broadway in 2010 before moving to Broadway later that year.
The story centers around nine young Black men falsely accused of rape by two white women on a train in 1931 Alabama. Thrust into a racist legal system, they face a harrowing fight for justice. The musical doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of prejudice and the fight for civil rights. Through powerful songs and a unique performance style that blends traditional musical theatre with elements of a minstrel show, The Scottsboro Boys confronts audiences with a dark chapter in American history.
