The Frist Center's Summer Concert Series, FRIST FRIDAYS, Kicks Off 5/29

Frist Fridays, the Frist Center’s popular summer concert series, kicks off May 29, 2009 with special musical guest Danielle Peck performing live in the Turner Courtyard. Now in its seventh year, the series, which this year takes place the final Friday evening of each month May through July from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., is one of Nashville’s most popular summer traditions, attracting visitors of all ages from Middle Tennessee and beyond. Patrons can enjoy an evening of live music, light snacks and beverages as well as visit the diverse exhibitions on view in the Frist Center’s galleries. Frist Fridays takes place rain or shine.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the events. 

Admission to Frist Fridays is free to Frist Center Members and included with regular gallery admission prices for all others. 

“We are pleased that, thanks to Fifth Third Bank, we are able to bring Frist Fridays to the community on the last Fridays of May, June and July,” said Frist Center Executive Director Dr. Susan H. Edwards. “Over the years, so many people have told us Frist Fridays introduced them to our institution and to our galleries, and it is tremendously important for us to continue this series,” Edwards continued. “We are particularly grateful this year to Danielle Peck and Supe Granda, wonderful artists who also have strong connections to the Frist Center.  We love being a location where art and music converge in such spectacular fashion,” she concluded.

Danielle Peck was born in Jacksonville, N.C., the daughter of a U.S. Marine and grew up in Coshocton, Ohio. Her mother's side of the family traveled and sang in churches. Her father's parents and grandparents were steeped in country music, playing dances in the area. At age 16, she joined a local band, the Neon Moon Band, and played bars around her hometown, as well as local summer fairs. At 18, her dad bought her a sound and light system that the family jokingly referred to as her 'college tuition.' When she graduated from high school, she hit the road leading her own band, adding regional fairs and festivals to the schedule.

After several years on the bar and festival circuit, Peck moved to Nashville, taking a job waiting tables and spending the rest of her time working on her songwriting and soon had a publishing deal.  

She was signed to the DreamWorks record label after an impromptu tableside audition for label executive Scott Borchetta.  Borchetta left DreamWorks and founded Big Machine Records, now Peck’s label. She has shared the stage with Trace Adkins, Toby Keith, Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney, among others.

June 26, 2009    Supe Granda and the Sandwiches 

A charter member of the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Supe Granda is an original member of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and continues tour with the popular group almost 40 years after they first appeared together.  Moving to Nashville from St. Louis in 1991, he formed Supe and the Sandwiches and quickly became one of Nashville’s most popular bands, known as widely for their superior musicianship as for their zany demeanor and material.  The band ceased performing in the 90s and is coming together again especially for this Frist Friday performance. 

In addition to his ongoing association with the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, the versatile and creative Granda is a published author, syndicated baseball writer, visual artist, cooking show host and polka band leader.  On a moderately more serious note, Supe is an accomplished and respected songwriter whose tunes have been recorded by artists including Chet Atkins, Augie Myers, Trent Summar and Dr. Demento.  

July 31, 2009   Super-T

Audiences may know him as the front man for the Tyrone Smith Review or simply as the Super T, caped in brilliant blue.  No matter. The result is an evening of classic rock, great and funky soul music, R & B.  And, of course, this music is all about groove, high energy and dancing.  

For almost 30 years, Super T has toured the Southeast, playing clubs, college campuses and music fests and weddings, becoming a bona fide legend in the process.  How good is this band?  Super T has performed at two inaugural balls, and last year, performed at Jenna Bush’s wedding. 

If, in your younger days, he performed at your fraternity party or wedding, come relive your youth… or bring the kids to hear your music! You were cool. Really, you were.

Admission to Frist Fridays is free for Frist Center members and to visitors 18 years and younger. General adult admission for non-members is $8.50, $7.50 for seniors and military, and $6.50 for college students with ID. 

This year, Frist Fridays will offer a special selection of economically-priced snack food available in the Frist Center Café.  The selections will vary for each event and will include such items as chicken wings, pizza, corn dogs and soft pretzels and will range in price from $2.50 to $4.50.

Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, located at 919 Broadway in downtown Nashville, Tenn., is an art exhibition center dedicated to presenting the finest visual art from local, regional, U.S. and international sources in a program of changing exhibitions. The Frist Center’s Martin ArtQuest Gallery features interactive stations relating to Frist Center exhibitions.
