Shawn Whitsell and Jack E. Chambers in THE CHRISTIANS

ACT 1 kicks off its 2016-17 season with a special limited engagement of Lucas Hnath's The Christians, directed by Chris Bosen, which opens tonight and continues through September 24 at Tulip Street United Methodist Church (522 Russell Street in Nashville). Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. for each performance.

Presented as a fundraiser for the company, The Christians features a cast of well-known Nashville actors, including Jack E. Chambers as Pastor Paul, Shawn Whitsell as associate Pastor Joshuar, Brittany Childers Nelson as the pastor's wife Elizabeth, Clark Harris as Elder Jay and Molly Breen as Jenny, a congregant.

According to a press release: "On the day Pastor Paul's congregation pays off their church debt, he is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundations of what his followers believe. A play about faith in America - and the trouble with changing your mind that the New York Times says, "raises probing questions;" BroadwayWorld.com calls, "utterly engrossing;" and the National Catholic Reporter says is, "powerful, riveting."

Tickets are $25 dollars for Friday nights, $30 for Saturday nights and are available now at http://tickets.act1online.com/ All proceeds will go to ACT 1. (Saturday evening performances include post-show dessert reception provided by Yuletide Confections, and talkback with special guests).
