She is 30 years old, is a phenomenal dancer and enthralls audiences the world over with her galvanizing re-imaginings of great classical ballets. For her first visit to Canada, the South African dancer DADA MASILO will appear with 11 electrifying dancers to present a Swan Lake that rattles the conventional wisdom and taboos of her native land. In an unlikely yet perfect fusion of classical and African dances, she rewrites the story of Prince Siegfried and performs the role of the beautiful Odette herself. Although he is unable to release her from the curse that transforms her every night into a white swan, he does succumb to the charms of a decidedly male black swan, an attraction that proves fatal. Homophobia, forced marriages, the legacy of apartheid and the ravages of AIDS are evoked with humour, sensitivity and lucid intelligence. A compelling work by an incredible artist.
