Montana Rep Seeks Submissions for 5 ON 5 PLAY SLAM; Deadline 8/8

By:

Montana Repertory Theatre, the professional theatre-in-residence at the University of Montana, is pleased to announce that it is in the process of creating a pool of twenty writers to be part of the Rep's new 5 on 5 Play Slam project.

Five times between August and April, a prompt will be sent to the Play Slam Pool. Those 20 playwrights will have a week to write a fifteen-minute play based on the prompt and return it to the Rep for anonymous review. Five of the newly written plays will be chosen to make up that 5 on 5 Play Slam. The selected playwrights will then have a week to meet with a director and complete rewrites, and a week to rehearse their pieces twice. Each three-week cycle will be capped by a staged reading in UM's Masquer Theatre.

Any and all playwrights are welcome and encouraged to apply for the Play Slam Pool by submitting a 10-page sample of their writing to the Rep. The sample need not be a full play: part of a play that demonstrates the writer's talent and craft will suffice. The deadline for the sample submission is Monday, August 8 at 5:00 pm.

Writing samples must be received in the following format:

· A single PDF or Word file emailed with the subject "PLAY SLAM Pool Submission"

· 1" margins

· Times New Roman font, 12 point

· Header with title of piece on each page

· Footer with page number on each page

Writing samples must be received with the following styles:

· Title page for the sample with playwright's name and contact information listed

· Character names in all caps, centered on page, with a single return after the name

· Dialogue left justified (1/2" indent on both left and right), with a double return after character's speech is finished

· Scene Headings bolded and underlined in all caps, left justified with no indent

· Stage directions italicized, left justified with 3 1/2" left indent, with a double return before and after

Submissions received past the deadline, longer than 10 pages, or without proper formatting (including email subject) will not be considered.

The Rep will notify the writers selected to be part of the 2016-2017 Play Slam Pool the week of August 15; the prompt and schedule for the first event will then be provided.

To submit a writing sample for consideration for the Play Slam Pool, email it to gregory.johnson@umontana.edu.
