In the wide range of works by Joseph Haydn, the part that constitutes the operatic repertoire remained unjustly in the shadow where in the 1970s, the Hungarian conductor Antal Dorati conducting a campaign of rehabilitation by recording all of the operas at the Eszterháza Palace. This light enables to reassess at fair value the gifts of Haydn for the scene. The operas of the Austrian composer finally stand Mozart masterpieces.

Composed in 1777 for the wedding of count Esterházy, son of prince Nicolas, the libretto of Il Mondo della Luna is based on a play by Goldoni. Ecclitico, astronomer auto proclaimed makes believe the old Buonafede that on the Moon, damselflies like old men, and that men dominate women, that the passage of the Earth to the Moon clears the ravages of time and brings peace between the sexes.
In fact, he wants his money, and his daughters. In this dramma giocoso feeling gave it to the interest and calculation. It is a fable about the gullibility of men, always ready to believe in wonders. This libretto cynical and tasty, Haydn composed music inventive and refined, as malicious as the spirit of Ecclitico!
