On April 3, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed a lage crowd in Menphis, Tennessee. He said he would like to live a long life, but that day he seemed sure he would not. In the last decade King had risen from the pulpit in Atlanta to take the national stage as the leader of the non-violent strugge for equality and justice. He was 39 years old. As he looked out over the crowd of people who had come to hear him, to glean hope from his boundless optimism, he told them he'd gone with God to the mountaintop; He'd seen th Promised Land and he assured the people standing before him that they would get there. In 24 hours, he would be dead--struck down by an assassin's ullet. Winner of the 2010 livier Award for New Plays and a Broadway sensation, The Mountaintop is an intimate, fictional portrait o Dr. King on the eve of his death.
