Hennepin Theatre Trust today announced the Spring 2009 honorees from among 31 Minnesota high schools participating in the 2008-2009 SpotLight Musical Theatre Program. The SpotLight awards recognize accomplishments by school and artistic category for this Hennepin Theatre Trust program which supports the work of Twin Cities' high schools that present musical theatre-from classics including Fiddler on the Roof to a new school edition of Sweeney Todd. The musicals are made possible by the collaboration of over 2,500 students and are seen by nearly 50,000 audience members annually.

All the SpotLight participants, including schools recognized earlier for their work with fall musicals, will also be honored at the SpotLight Awards, the program's culminating event. This year's Awards are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the Orpheum Theatre. This gala evening features award presentations to the students and showcases excerpts from their recent high school musicals. It is a celebration that recognizes high school musical theatre accomplishments in much the same way that the Tony Awards® acknowledge Broadway excellence. Tickets are available for only $12 at HennepinTheatreTrust.org.

The Spring SpotLight honorees, selected from high schools who presented musicals in Spring 2009, are from Arden Hills, Blaine, Cottage Grove, Edina, Fridley, Hopkins, Maplewood, Mendota Heights, Minneapolis, Plymouth, Roseville, St. Francis, St. Paul and South St. Paul. Previously announced honorees for musicals held in Fall 2008 were from Apple Valley, Bloomington, Centennial, Circle Pines, Chaska, Eagan, Forest Lake, Fridley, Hopkins, Lakeville, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Mound Westonka, New Hope, Shakopee and Wayzata. A comprehensive list of program participants, all 2008-2009 honorees by school and category, and the new Spring honorees is attached and also at HennepinTheatreTrust.org..
