The Guthrie Theater's all-new production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol received rave reviews, opening November 25 on the Wurtele Thrust Stage in Minneapolis. With a newly-commissioned script by British playwright Crispin Whittell, director Joe Dowling takes the reigns of this Twin Cities holiday tradition, which features a re-envisioned production from a new creative team - set designer Walt Spangler (Broadway: Desire Under the Elms, Hollywood Arms), costume designer Mathew J. LeFebvre, Tony Award-winning lighting designer Christopher Akerlind (Broadway: Superior Donuts, Top Girls, 110 in the Shade, Awake and Sing, Shining City, Well, Rabbit Hole, The Light in the Piazza, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Seven Guitars, among others), composer Keith Thomas, sound designer Scott W. Edwards and aerial flight director John Stead. British theater, television and film actor Daniel Gerroll plays the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in the holiday production, which marks its 36th year on the Guthrie stage.

Rohan Preston, Star Tribune
"The production has some awesome flying entrances and many gorgeous moments... I welcome the new energy and sharpness that Dowling, Whittell and the fine cast have brought to this 'Carol.' They have vividly remade a classic."

Renee Valois, Pioneer Press
"Gerroll's Scrooge has a physical power that is normally lacking in the role... Walt Spangler's set is a delight, effectively conveying the lamp-lit cobblestone streets of Victorian London ... this fresh version of Dickens' 167-year-old tale isn't miserly with Christmas spirit. Not your same old 'Christmas Carol' - but entertaining, as always."

Brad Richason, Examiner.com
"Where this 'Christmas Carol' differs is in the boundless energy and refreshing wit of Whittell's script... the Guthrie's new take on 'A Christmas Carol' displays enough imagination, technical ingenuity, and memorable performances to justify its prominence as essential theater for the holiday season."

Tad Simons, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine
"A charmingly entertaining re-telling... it's nice to see Dickens get some much-needed freshening"

David Hawley, MinnPost.com
"The new 'Christmas Carol' is a handsome holiday machine... those who come to this show for a holiday spectacle will not be disappointed."

Janet Preus, HowWasTheShow.com
"A decidedly lighter and more contemporary slant, in terms of sensibilities, but the brightly rendered, familiar characters are all there... Gerroll shows wonderful range and color in his characterizations... There are a few timeless shows that are just meant to be enjoyed again and again, in all their renderings. This would be one of them, and it is pure delight."

A Christmas Carol continues performances at the Guthrie Theater through December 30.
