"Great Pumpkin Drop" Returns to St. Paul 11/7
The Macalester-Groveland Community Council, with the support of the City of St. Paul and Barthold Farms, will sponsor the twelfth annual "Great Pumpkin Drop" on Saturday, November 7, 2009. The event is free and open to all Saint Paul residents. People are invited to drop off their wax free, unpainted pumpkins and jack o' lanterns at Immanuel Lutheran Church parking lot, 104 South Snelling, St. Paul, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Pumpkins will be fed to animals at a local farm. About 15 tons of pumpkins were collected last year, and the volume increases each year.
Diverting pumpkins from the waste stream has multiple benefits. First, the pumpkins are re-used as animal food and are thereby included in the natural cycle. Second, removing tons of wet, moist pumpkins from the fuel-burning waste stream at Resource Recovery facility allows the remaining fuel types, such as garbage, to burn more efficiently. Lastly, animals love to eat the pumpkins!
