The Brave New Workshop Experimental Thinking Centre is proud to announce a show coming to the Twin Cities, "Asperger's Are Us."

This groundbreaking group, comprised of four individuals on the autism spectrum, will perform original sketches written by the group. Rather than focusing on the Asperger's condition, this group seeks to perform comedy based on the unique worldview and sensibilities of someone with Asperger's. However, audiences are warned ahead of time: don't expect this to be like watching "The Big Bang Theory."

The group's website, aspergersareus.com, gives its warning in more detail; "We formed for the same reason anyone does comedy: To make you laugh! Please do not expect us to be anything like The Big Bang Theory or anything else that relies on making fun of people. Expect silly deadpan sketches that appeal to Aspies and sympathetic others alike."

Asked recently in a Reddit AMA what makes their comedy uniquely appealing to those on the spectrum, the group replied, "Aspies excel at wordplay and are more able to interpret scenes [without] connotations than neurotypicals are, so our dark absurdist puns don't mislead Aspies into thinking there's meaning behind our work. [Audience members not on the spectrum] often make this error. It's easier for us to make the associations needed to understand complex wordplay, too. For example, Ethan can switch quickly like a light rail to a freight."

Brave New Workshop Entertainment Company President Earl Mollerud is particularly excited for this group. "When the ETC started, it was a place for new and different groups to showcase their comedy to a wider audience. This is a perfect example of a group doing something different but getting the same results that all comedians want: laughter and joy."

Asperger's Are Us was also featured in a recent documentary, released in November of this past year. The documentary, available on Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes, details the group performing in what was billed as "their last show."

Asperger's Are Us will be performing in the Brave New Workshop ETC Theatre on Sunday, August 6th at 7:30p - tickets are available via bravenewworkshop.com or through calling the box office at 612-332-6620.
