Seventy-five young ballroom dancers from the Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap arts education program will participate in a tango audition for Forever Tango creator and director Luis Bravo on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. in the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts' Bradley Pavilion. Bravo will select five couples from among the auditioning group to open for the production of Forever Tango appearing at the Marcus Center on October 1 at 8:00 p.m. in Uihlein Hall. The public is welcome to watch the audition and ancillary activities, described below.

Modeled after the successful New York City schools program featured in the hit documentary Mad Hot Ballroom, Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap (MHBT) teaches life skills and impacts school attendance and academic performance by integrating tap and ballroom dance classes into the regular school curriculum. Students receive instruction from professional teaching artists over the course of 12 weeks. The majority of schools participating in the program are located in low-income neighborhoods of the city.

Students participating in next week's audition were part of MHBT during the 2008-09 school year, and they represent schools such as Elm Creative Arts School, Hartford University, HOPE Middle School and Vieau. Students and teachers from these schools will attend the audition to cheer on their classmates. Approximately 300 young people are expected to attend.

Immediately following the audition, Luis Bravo will lead all audition participants in a 30-minute open master class. Bravo and some of his Forever Tango artists will then share some of the cultural highlights of the show with all attendees, which will include a demonstration of the instrument of the tango, the bandoneon. The morning will conclude at 11:30 a.m. with an open rehearsal for the five tango couples, led by Bravo.

Luis Bravo's Forever Tango is an internationally celebrated entertainment event that has played to great acclaim in Europe, Canada and throughout the United States, and most recently enjoyed its third run on Broadway. Forever Tango features fourteen world-class tango dancers, one vocalist and an on-stage eleven piece orchestra, in an evening that celebrates the passionate music and dance of Argentina.
Tickets for Forever Tango at the Marcus Center are priced at $57.50, $47.50 and $33 and vary depending on seat location. A limited number of $100 box seats are available, which include a pre-show tango lesson and Argentine wine and empanadas at intermission. A portion of the proceeds of the $100 tickets will benefit Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap program. For tickets, visit the Marcus Center Box Office, 929 North Water Street in downtown Milwaukee, call (414) 273-7206 or log on to https://www.marcuscenter.org/TicketsOnline.htm.
