The New Theatre Project Adds If You Start a Fire [Be Prepared to Burn] to Season 2: Revelation

By:
After a tremendously successful staged reading and overwhelming audience response, The New Theatre Project is pleased to announce the addition of If You Start a Fire [Be Prepared to Burn], an Internet sex comedy for the Recession Generation, by Kevin Kautzman to the lineup of its second season.

Lucy and Chris are typical American twenty-somethings struggling to survive the Great Recession with their dignity intact. They hate their jobs like most everybody else, but they need the insurance, and at least they have each other. Right? When Chris loses his job, he convinces Lucy they should launch a boutique sex website and sell the idea of her as an all-American girl next door, somehow both pure and hedonistic at the same time.

Kevin Kautzman, originally from North Dakota, is pursuing his M.F.A. with a focus in playwriting and screenwriting as a Michener Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. He began studying playwriting in London at The Royal Court Theatre, where he became a core writer out of the Young Writers Program. He has received commissions from Red Eye and History Theatre, and his work has been performed, read and/or developed at places including the American Story Project, the Living Theatre, The New Theatre Project, Nouveau 47, The Players’ Guild Theater, the Playwrights’ Center, Poliglot Theater, the Soho Theatre Studio (UK), the UK National Student Drama Festival, and Zeitgeist Theater. Honors include the Jerome and Michener fellowships and Tennessee Williams Scholarship for Then Waves, Lavender Magazine’s Best Playwriting for Iris and the International Student Playscript Competition and Repertory Theatre Iowa’s Alpha Project awards for Coyote. He has been a finalist for the Yale Drama Series and Pen Center awards (Then Waves) and the NNPN Smith Prize for Quiver. Kevin is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, where he studied history and philosophy, and is a member of the Dramatists Guild Inc., the Playwrights’ Center, and Scriptworks.
