The Matrix School of Theatre Offers Free Workshops and Classes for Detroit Youth
The Matrix School of Theatre is pleased to partner with neighboring institutions and organizations to offer free programming for Detroit youth ages 11 - 18. Workshops will take place at various locations and times, and feature theatre and performing arts activities that build resilience, literacy, and interpersonal skills. For more information about current workshops and partnership opportunities, please call (313) 967-0999 ext. 3 or visit www.matrixtheatre.org.
Workshops and classes at Conely and Bowen branches of Detroit Public Library and COMPAS are scheduled. Please refer to detailed schedule for time, date, and duration information. In addition to offering workshops open to the community, Matrix's School of Theatre has received a Partnership for Youth Intensification and Enhancement (PIE) grant to bring its playwriting and performance programs to after school programs at Academy of the Americas and Voyageur Academy. Matrix worked with the partnering schools and Partnership for Youth to develop these after school programs, running October through December, to meet student demand for theatre programs.
"We are excited to be able to offer our School of Theatre programs throughout southwest Detroit thanks to these valuable partnerships," said Colleen Cartwright, Matrix's Education Coordinator. "These partnerships allow us to offer our theatre arts programming in satellite locations, where valuable non-arts programs are already taking place. These non-profit organizations and libraries are working very hard to reach local youth, and we are proud to be part of the effort."
Matrix Theatre Company teaches, creates, and shares theatre as a tool of transformation to improve lives, build community, and foster social justice. For more than 25 years, Matrix has partnered with organizations, schools, agencies, libraries, and more to develop outstanding, affordable, inclusive programs with positive outcomes for youth, adults, and elders.
The Matrix School of Theatre is staffed by knowledgeable practitioners and all teaching artists are trained in "The Matrix Way" methodology of facilitating youth to write, produce, and perform original plays. All programs are developed in collaboration to fit the needs and desired outcomes of partners. For more information about how to bring Matrix programs to your organization or institution, please call (313) 967-0999 ext. 3 or visit www.matrixtheatre.org.
