Through the generosity of the members of the Mayor Dave Bing Inaugural Committee, approximately 4500 pre-selected Detroit youngsters and their families will enjoy the antics and fun of "Elmo's Green Thumb" at a special performance at the Fox Theatre on Thursday, January 28.
The Committee is underwriting the cost of the special performance, which takes place the evening before the show's official scheduled opening. "Elmo's Green Thumb" officially opens to the public on Friday, January 29 with 30 performances through Monday, February 15.
The children were pre-selected by various charitable and non-profit organizations in Detroit.
"We wanted to share the community's delight over Mayor Bing's commitment to renewing the spirit of Detroit - and what better way than including our children in the celebrations." said Loran Moten, co-chair of the Mayor Dave Bing Inaugural Committee.
Prior to the performance, the mayor's three daughters - Aleisha, Bridgett and Cassaundra Bing - as well as his granddaughter, Caris, will welcome the audience. "Elmo's Green Thumb" follows Sesame Street character Elmo and friends as they search for a new home for Elmo's sunflower, Sunny, in the all new Sesame Street Live stage show.
On Wednesday, Sesame Street Live characters will accompany the mayor and his family on a visit to the Children's Hospital of Michigan. Mayor Bing will proclaim January 28 "Sesame Street Live Day in the City of Detroit" and present Elmo with a key to the city.
Sesame Street Live productions feature timeless lessons for all ages. The universal appeal of each Broadway-quality musical production continues long after preschool. Adults appreciate the high-tech stagecraft, cleverly written scripts and music they recognize and enjoy with their children.
