BROKE-OLOGY Opens at WSU Studio Theatre Tonight, 11/15

The Studio Theatre presents Broke-ology by Nathan Louis Jackson a story about a loving African American family. Playing for a limited engagement of only two weekends, Broke-ology will run from tonight, November 15 through Saturday, November 24, 2012.

Broke-ology is the story of the King family, an African American family that lives in Kansas City. In light of their father’s deteriorating health, brothers Ennis and Malcolm find themselves at odds in deciding how to care for him. Broke-ology is a comic drama that is centered on a tight-knit family that fights against its many problems, with strength, humor, and above all else love.

Director Julia Moriarty comments, “Though the King family has not always had the opportunity or the means to accomplish all that they dreamed, they have banned together to withstand their difficulties as a family. As their patriarch becomes ill, the sons must determine which is more important: their dedication to their own dreams and aspirations, or their dedication to the family that has always been supportive and loving.”

Broke-ology was written by a talented young African American playwright, Nathan Louis Jackson, who grew up in an impoverished neighborhood in Kansas City, similar to that in the play. After years of struggle, he has now established himself as an up-and-coming playwright in the realist tradition of his Pulitzer Prize winning idol, August Wilson.

The cast includes (in alphabetical order): Katrina Carson as (Sonia King), Denzel Clark as (Ennis King), Derell Jones as (Malcolm King), James Jordan as (William King).

The production team includes: Julia Moriarty (Director), Patrick Lienemann (Stage Manager), Tyler Ezell (Lighting Designer), Lisa Berg (Scenic Designer), Fred Florkowski (Technical Director), Katelyn Fuqua (Property Master), Neil Sacks (Costume Designer), Michael Hallberg (Sound Designer), and Felix Li (Publicity Manager).

The Studio Theatre is an intimate, 110-seat, open-stage theatre in the lower level of the Hilberry Theatre on Wayne State University’s campus that is often used for experimental, student, and classroom productions. Annual programming includes the PhD Directors’ Series, the Student Stage and the Louise Heck-Rabi Dramatic Writing Competition. For nearly fifty years the Studio Theatre has presented great theatre featuring WSU undergraduate students. With generous support from patrons and donors, the Studio Theatre recently underwent renovation.
