Victorian Thriller, GASLIGHT, Opens at Florida Rep

Florida Repertory Theatre is announced the opening of Gaslight, a classic Victorian thriller and one of the longest running shows in Broadway history.

Opening Dec. 3 with discounted previews on Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2, Gaslight is the second play in the Rep's Lucky 13th Season, and was made famous by the 1944 film starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Angela Lansbury.

Set in 1880's fog-bound London, Gaslight is an edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller that tells the story of the Manninghams of Angel Street. Under the guise of kindliness, the handsome Mr. Manningham is torturing his wife into insanity in hopes of ultimately disposing of her and getting away with murder. It is the quintessential Victorian thriller is filled with intrigue, treachery and good, old-fashioned melodramatic fun.

"We're very pleased to bring this play to life for Southwest Florida audiences," said Producing Artistic Director and the play's director, Robert Cacioppo, "it is a wonderful melodrama, a very rich story, and a genre we don't see often enough. This is a 180 degree turn from Noises Off, and is exactly the kind of variety we strive for at Florida Rep."

Gaslight stars Rachel Burttram and Tony Cormier as the ill-fatEd Manninghams, and Herman Petras as Inspector Rough, the tenacious detective who sees to Mr. Manningham's undoing. Burttram is a familiar face at Florida Rep, and was seen most recently in last season's Trying and Opus. Both Florida Rep newcomers, Cormier and Petras come to Fort Myers from New York and were seen in Florida Rep's season opener, Noises Off.

Also featured in the production are Carrie Lund and Rachel Swindler. Lund, the company's co-founder and associate producer, was seen most recently in this season's Noises Off, as well as last season's Relatively Speaking, Boeing-Boeing and nationally acclaimed production of You Can't Take it With You. Swindler is an intern with the company this season appearing in The Children's Theatre Series productions, and comes to Fort Myers from Myrtle Beach South Carolina as a recent graduate of Coastal Carolina University.

Florida Rep Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo (Noises Off, You Can't Take It With You, Boeing Boeing), directs the production, and is joined by an the Rep's team of designers. The creative team includes set designer Scott Cooper, a newcomer to the Rep, lighting designer Todd O. Wren (Doubt, Rabbit Hole), resident costume designer Roberta Malcolm (Noises Off, You Can't Take It With You), Florida Rep resident sound designer Kate Smith (Dial 'M' for Murder) and production stage manager Audrey M.
