Indiana native and talented singer/songwriter, Carrie Newcomer will bring her unique blend of spiritual and folk music to the Squitieri Studio Theatre (located inside the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts) on Friday, September 11, 7:30 p.m. Newcomer's new Rounder release, The Geography of Light, is about navigating and exploring the appearance of light and shadow in our lives. In a world that encourages us to move faster and think bigger, Newcomer invites the listener to slow down and reflect on the small things that make life worthwhile.

Carrie Newcomer has been described as "a soaring songstress" by Billboard and "a rising star" by The Wall Street Journal, a "prairie mystic" by the Boston Globe. She has toured with Alison Krauss Europe and the U.S. Nickel Creek recorded Newcomer's song I Should've Known Better, on their Grammy-winning album This Side.

Carrie facilitates writing and spirituality, vocation and activism workshops at colleges, universities, spiritual communities, retreat centers and festivals throughout the country and internationally. In the 2007-2008 season, Newcomer was one the performers and creators of the Emmy-nominated Wilderness Plots CD, Theater Production.

Carrie will be releasing her newest CD Before and After on Rounder Records in February 2010.

"To my mind - a writer's mind- Carrie Newcomer is much more than a musician. She's a poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace." --Barbara Kingsolver

"I love Carrie Newcomer. She writes and sings about what is most personal to her and in doing so she speaks to the wider world. Her new CD, The Geography of Light is full of gorgeous arrangements that frame her soulful vocals, and the song Geodes will make you catch your breath with its wisdom and beauty..." -- Mary Chapin Carpenter

University of Florida Performing Arts does more than entertain. It breaks down walls. It breaks down the walls between people by increasing cultural awareness through programming that attracts artists and audiences from around the globe. It breaks down the wall between patron and performer with educational programs such as master classes, artist residencies and pre- and post-performance discussions. It breaks down the wall between health and illness with AIM Together, a collaborative program between UFPA and Shands HealthCare that brings world-class performing artists to those who are hospitalized. It breaks down the wall between idea and realization by commissioning and nurturing new work. Art doesn't have walls. But sometimes life does. UFPA breaks down the walls, enriching the lives of the citizens in the Heart of Florida, helping to make Gainesville "the #1 place to live."
