Palm Beach Resident Returns to NYC as Finalist for Playwrighting Competition

By:

Cynthia Morrison, of Palm Beach Florida, is a graduate of the Burt Reynolds Institute. This month she will travel to New York City where her short play, "Going Up?", will be featured as a finalist in the New York Equity Library Summer Playwriting festival. The same short play was featured Off Off Broadway last March during "Take Back the Rom Com" evening of short plays at the Jewel Box Theatre in Manhattan.

Morrison explained that, "The inspiration for creating my short play, Going Up?, was the actual fear of escalators that my grandmother dealt with during her lifetime. I remember well when she and I would go shopping in the 1960's & 70's that she would stop abruptly and hesitate getting onto the escalator." Later on in life Morrison learned through research that "Escalaphobia" is an actual fear that is very real. Some escalaphobics see these moving steps as reaching on into infinity while other victims of the condition become dizzy and experience motion sickness. There is also treatment for escalaphobia.

In her play "Going Up?" she presents a young couple in process of purchasing their wedding rings. The "Bride to be" expresses her terrifying emotions towards the only route available in gaining her everlasting band of gold which happens to be the escalator!

Cynthia is also a visual artist that recently had her work inducted into the Crime and Punishment Museum in Ashburn Georgia. "I have been creating art with fear for a number of years in one form or another. Its what I do and Its what I'm good at. My play 'Going Up?' is based on an actual phobia and seems to be growing in popularity." she shared. Last year Morrison's play "Peppered Precinct" won 2nd prize and was presented in a Washington D.C. Theatre. Her play "Going up?" can be seen during New York's Equity Library/Piney Fork Theater - 2015 Summer Playwriting Festival
