The production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL being presented at the VAN WEZEL on Wednesday, December 22 at 7:00 p.m. is a family tradition across the country.

When Charles Dickens wrote his "ghostly little tale" in 1843, he could not have dreamed that A CHRISTMAS CAROL was destined to become one of the most beloved holiday traditions of all time. By telling a tale that illustrated the unfairness of the Industrial Revolution and the necessity for brotherhood and unselfishness, Dickens gave the world one of its more enduring Christmas stories.

The Nebraska Theatre Caravan, the professional touring wing of the Omaha Community Playhouse, has been touring Charles Jones' delightful adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL since 1979. The Caravan's CAROL, which weaves traditional Christmas carols throughout the narrative, is probably the most widely produced production of Dickens' in the nation, annually performing for more than 100,000 people in more than 60 cities across the US. One of the many reasons for the success of the Caravan's A CHRISTMAS CAROL is the unique re-telling of the oft-old tale. It is enormously enhanced by James Othuse's beautiful set, which recreates 1880s London, and gives the entire production the effect of being a Christmas card come to life.

""I think of this adaptation as a masque," says the show's originator Charles Jones, "true to masque form, the entire production unashamedly takes advantage of the excitement of live theatre. The characters are larger than life could ever be." This is certainly true of this year's Scrooge, Hughston Walkinshaw, who is sure to make an impression. Walkinshaw admits Scrooge is one of the more challenging roles he has played. "The audience has to be on Scrooge's side, even though he's this miserly curmudgeon," Walkinshaw said. "The audience still has to like him, and want him to succeed in this dramatic, life-changing event."

Ticket prices range from $10 to $50. For more information and to buy tickets, contact the Van Wezel Box office at (941) 953-3368 or log onto www.vanwezel.org. This show is a part of the Boar's Head Family Series & sponsored by: Holiday Inn Sarasota Bradenton Airport.
