Legendary Baritone Sherrill Milnes Honored at Pompano Beach Cultural Center Tuesday The Pompano Beach Cultural Center (www.ccpompano.org) will be hosting a tribute gala presented by The Venetian Arts Society (www.venetianartssociety.org) honoring one of the world's most acclaimed baritones, Sherrill Milnes. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 16 at 6pm and will begin with a champagne reception and viewing of the Cultural Center's current art exhibit, "afrique."

"It is very rare for South Florida audiences to experience an up-close-and-personal evening with an opera legend such as Sherrill Milnes," said William Riddle, Executive Director of The Venetian Arts Society. "Mr. Milnes is the most recorded American opera singer in history, so this is truly going to be a wonderful experience for our guests."

The event will feature an entertaining video retrospective of the baritone's illustrious career highlighting his most iconic roles. In addition, the evening will feature key speakers including critic Mario Hamlet-Metz and Caroline Pierce, chairman of the board of the Florida Grand Opera. Towards the end of the presentation, Mr. Milnes will join the discussion to speak about his operatic career.

With his powerful voice, commanding stage presence, and rugged handsomeness, Milnes received the kind of adulation that is usually reserved for tenors. He sang over 650 performances at the Met, where he was honored with sixteen new productions, seven opening nights, and ten national telecasts. As a leading artist in all of the world's great opera houses, Milnes performed and recorded with the likes of Domingo, Pavarotti, Caballé, Sutherland, Sills, Horne, Price, and Tebaldi. He is the winner of three Grammy Awards, and the most recorded American singer of his time. In 2008 he received the Opera News Award for Distinguished Achievement.

Driven by his dedication to make the vocal arts vibrant, vital, and entertaining in today's world, Milnes continues to give masterclasses, judge competitions, and mentor new generations of singers. With his wife, Maria Zouves, he co-founded and runs the Sherrill Milnes VOICE Programs: VOICExperience Foundation and the Savannah VOICE Festival provide training for aspiring young artists while fostering new audiences for the arts.

Tickets are $50 for the general public and $35 for members of the Venetian Arts Society and NSU Art Museum of Florida.
