KEY WEST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS
Jason Robert Brown's "SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD"

 

 

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Betsy Ross and Mrs. Santa Claus are among the characters who confront critical turning points in their lives amid the musical splendor of Jason Robert Brown's Songs for A New World which will be presented by the Key West Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, April 15 at 8 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Influenced by a broad range of musical genres including pop, gospel, jazz and classical music, the musical theater piece for five musicians and four singers moves across centuries to tell the story of Americans and those who would become Americans as they yearn for a better existence. The acclaimed score includes its centerpiece song "Stars and the Moon" which has been recorded by renowned singers Audra McDonald, Karen Akers and Betty Buckley.

Brown won a 1999 Tony Award for his score to Parade, was recognized with the Drama Desk Award for Best Music and Best Lyrics for The Last Five Years and recently was represented on Broadway with his latest musical 13. Since its debut Off-Broadway in 1995, Songs for a New World has had more than 200 productions around the world.

David TRoy Francis, composer of Bark the Musical, directs and plays piano in this production of the musical revue in the mold of Starting Here, Starting Now and Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well and Living in Paris.

The Key West Symphony Orchestra made its debut at the Tennessee Williams Theatre on Friday, December 11, 1998. The ensemble presents concerts and educational programming in its community and is led by founder and music director Sebrina Maria Alfonso who has appeared as guest conductor with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Cuba, San Jose Symphony, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Prague Radio Symphony and Orchestra de Rús in Sienna, Italy, among others.
