Florida Grand Opera (FGO) and South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) will be collaborating to present a special Florida Grand Opera Family Day on Saturday January 7, 2017. This day of opera-related activities seeks to encourage inclusion in the arts, allowing children to discover that "Opera is for You". This event is part of SMDCAC's Family Series presented by Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay.

"Getting to bring this Opera Family Day again to South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is a wonderful opportunity," says FGO's Director of Education and Community Engagement, Rebekah Diaz-Fandrei. "This center and it's staff is committed to bringing great cultural experiences to South Miami-Dade and are very supportive of FGO's educational mission to educate, entertain, and encourage a community of opera lovers."

Children of all ages can explore the world of opera through hands-on activities, interactive experiences, and the thrill of live theater. Activities will engage children in aspects of the creative fields that go into bringing an opera to life to spark each child's interest in this grand art form. From stage makeup to special effects, prop design to singing, activities are sure to have something for everyone. To sprinkle the experience with even more musical energy, roaming a capella singers will perform throughout the event.

The day will conclude with members of Florida International University's Vocal Performance Program putting all of these elements together in a performance of The Toy Shop - a 45-minute, hilarious and family-friendly opera featuring two toys who come to life! Children who stay until the end of the performance will be given a free gift courtesy of Florida Grand Opera's Department of Education and Community Engagement.

FGO will host another Family Day event on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. A separate press release will be distributed closer to the event date.

ABOUT SOUTH MIAMI-DADE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center provides a world-class, multi-disciplinary cultural venue and community gathering place in the southern part of Miami-Dade County. The Center plays a key role in the economic and cultural development of the area and opened on October 1, 2011.

In addition to providing a diverse range of quality entertainment to people from all backgrounds and ages, the Center's mission includes an emphasis on educational and outreach activities in partnership with community groups. The Center's multiple rehearsal and performing spaces also offer accessible state-of-the-art facilities to the Miami-Dade artistic community, presenters and audiences throughout South Florida.

After Hurricane Andrew devastated South Miami-Dade in 1992, Commissioner Dennis C. Moss developed a comprehensive vision, known as the Moss plan for revitalization of the area, which included among many things, the building of a state-of-the-art cultural center. In 1994 Miami-Dade County purchased land to accommodate a new cultural center in the southern part of the county. The building was completed in 2011.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is managed by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, with funding from the Office of the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The Center is dedicated to presenting and supporting arts and culture and providing access to the arts to the entire Miami-Dade County community.
