Economic Recovery Funds for the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts selected 633 Arts Organizations from a National

Pool of 2,400 Applicants; 12 are located in Florida; one is in Broward County!

The Broward County Cultural Division will receive a grant of $250,000 for salary assistance to local arts organizations from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), through President Obama's economic stimulus package-American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Arts organizations will have the opportunity to apply for funds to provide salary support for an existing staff member who will be laid off, to rehire a staff member who has been laid off, or to retain artistic/contracted services. "This is a direct example of funds being channeled to retain jobs of cultural workers in Broward County and stimulate the economy," says County Administrator Bertha Henry.

Nationally, the amount which totals $29.78 million is allocated among 633 arts groups in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and several territories. Of those 633, twelve are located in Florida, including the Broward County Cultural Division.

Even before President Barack Obama signed the ARRA into law on February 17, County staff was mobilized to respond. A Broward County Stimulus Grants Coordination Office, www.broward.org/recovery, has been established for the purpose of centralizing the identification, development, review, approval and tracking for grants and contracts resulting from ARRA. It is staffed by Linda Ross, stimulus grants coordinator. The website is a useful tool for grant information.

Eligibility requirements will be available for Broward Cultural Division's grantees in the Cultural Diversity, General Operating and Major Cultural Institution grant programs. Applications and guidelines will be available online at the Cultural Division website in early August 2009.

Young at Art Children's Museum-an additional Broward County arts organization is also approved to receive a grant through The Florida Arts Recovery Program, in the amount of $25,000, from The Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts.

Please visit the Broward Cultural Division website at www.broward.org/arts for more information.

Broward Cultural Division enhances the cultural environment of Broward County through the development of the arts. More than 1.8 million residents, 10.1 million visitors, 10,000 artists, 5,660 arts-related businesses, including 550 not-for-profit cultural organizations and 31 municipalities are beneficiaries of the services, technical assistance and grant funds. As a cultural catalyst in the South Florida region, the Division is instrumental in the support of world-class arts and cultural facilities and quality events that enhance the South Florida region. The Division also supports facilities such as a Cultural Information Center;  ArtParks (cultural centers in parks) and artists' live/work lofts; coordinates arts education and marketing programs; offers micro-credit lending to artists; enhances urban design sites and county facilities through the Public Art and Design Program.
