SOUTH PACIFIC Opens at Theatre Memphis

South Pacific sails onto the Theatre Memphis Lohrey Stage June 2 - 25, 2017. This Pulitzer Prize-winning musical follows a nurse stationed on an island during World War II who is in love with a French expatriate plantation owner. She struggles accepting his mixed-raced children and, along with another romance between a U.S. Lieutenant and a young island native, issues of racial prejudice and gender roles are candidly explored. Filled with memorable songs such as "Some Enchanted Evening", "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair" and "Bali Ha'i", to name a few.

Loathe to share her space, Abby challenges Marilyn to a seemingly harmless bet where the loser abandons the sunny top-floor room. The events that follow take the women on a ridiculous journey that reveals not only the tenacity of these worthy opponents but also some secrets they would rather remain hidden. Ripcord brings us the fight of the century, and after all, wouldn't they know?

Before a pop-up screening of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at the Halloran Centre tonight, the Orpheum Theatre Group revealed the lineup for the 2017 Summer Movie Series. Presented by Orion Federal Credit Union for a sixth year, the series will run from June 2 to August 25 in the historic Orpheum Theatre. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 5, at 10am.

Independent Hip-Hop Artists featured in Memphis Opera Festival

The independent hip-hop music tour RiverKings 2 Tour will bring a exciting addition to the 2017 Midtown Memphis Opera Festival. Memphian Marco Pave and New Orleans' Alfred Banks will offer sounds of music's youngest genre to one it's oldest styles. Alongside Pave and Banks, River Kings at the Opera is a collection of five operas/performances designed to showcase the art of hip hop and connect it to the tradition of opera. Memphis musician and composer Sam Shoup arranged the music. Shoup has arrnaged for The Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Pops Orchestra, Kallen Esperian and the New York Pops. Opera Memphis received a development grant from Opera America for the groundbreaking performance.
