Shrek The Musical kicks off Theatre Memphis' 98th season on the Lohrey Stage and runs August 18 - September 10, 2017. Adapted from a hit animated film, Shrek The Musical follows Shrek, an embittered ogre, and his loyal steed Donkey as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful yet temperamental Princess Fiona from a fire breathing, love-sick dragon. Add the diminutive power-hungry Lord Farquaad and a gang of fairytale misfits, and you've got a singing and dancing extravaganza, perfect for an evening of great family fun.

Director Cecelia Wingate exudes, "This Shrek is for everybody. There are lively, colorful moments where craziness abounds, and there are touching moments that break your heart." Furthermore she adds, "What I love most about Shrek is the storytelling. It is warm and vital to our times ... about acceptance of who and what we are and being just fine with that. All of the characters are on the same journey....Shrek's journey ... to find acceptance, to find a friend, to find home, to find love. And they all come through it and learn something about themselves. They all come out better people (or creatures or animals) than they were when they first begin the journey. "

The award-winning Wingate feels fortunate to have some of the best voices in the city bringing this story to life and some of the best actors. She also exclaims that TM has "... the best design team to handle the special challenges that Shrek presents. This show is about village.....and it takes a village to mount it!!!!"

Theatre Memphis Executive Producer feels the same way. "When Theatre Memphis takes on a project as big as this ogre of a show, I have every confidence that our commitment to consistent artistic excellence will win the day," she says. "TM tries to create a family atmosphere for all our volunteer actors, crew and front and back of the house operators, and a show like Shrek just re-enforces what family and unconditional love is."
