Snowlion Repertory Company has received a $5000 grant from the Maine Theater Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to develop and produce a new adaptation of Chekhov's classic "The Cherry Orchard" set in Maine and entitled "A Cherry Orchard in Maine."
"A Cherry Orchard in Maine" is set in Maine and created from a literal translation by Columbia University Professor Ronald Meyer.

"In this rendering of 'The Cherry Orchard' we explore themes of mom and pop business versus corporate takeover, the changing economy, immigrants assimilating into society, damaging provincialism in small towns, tenant farmers, homelessness, and the desire to escape from challenging, even tragic events in our lives - all seasoned with Chekhov's characteristic humor as well," said Artistic Director Al D'Andrea.

"Our mission at Snowlion Rep is to present new works of cultural, ethical, and spiritual value," said D'Andrea, "and our adaptation of Chekhov's timeless play will resonate strongly with our community of Mainers."

Snowlion Rep is a nonprofit professional theater company in Greater Portland that presents new plays and musicals to inspire and delight local audiences. For more information, call (207) 518-9305 or visit www.snowlionrep.org.
