New Awards to Honor Maine High School Musical Theater
![]()
Beginning with the 2017/18 school year, Portland non-profit theater company Cast Aside Productions will launch the Cast Aside Awards: honoring excellence in Maine high school musical theater.
"It is easy to overlook the contributions these programs make to the theater community," said David Surkin, Artistic Director of Cast Aside Productions and one of the judges for this year's awards. "High school is the first place most people experience the collaborative creation of a musical--it is the training ground for the next generation of theater professionals and patrons, alike. We aim to recognize this work for its important influence on the growth of theater arts in Maine."
Prize categories to be awarded include Best Musical Production and Best Ensemble, as well as individual performance, design, and crew awards. To ensure inclusion and fairness, programs will be split into divisions based on total production budget.
All Maine high school musical theater productions opening between Oct 1, 2017 - May 12, 2018 will be eligible for consideration.
