A concert of classical guitar works, featuring Lily Afshar, will be the next offering of the Warren Memorial Visiting Artist Series. Afshar will perform well-known classical guitar solos by Tarrega, Barrios, Reis, Bach, Brouwer, Granados, and Albeniz, along with a collection of Persian & Azerbaijani Ballads arranged by the performer.

Acclaimed as "one of the world's foremost classical guitarists" according to Public Radio International, Lily's unique life story finds expression in her art, blending excellent formal training in the United States and Europe with the rich cultural heritage of Persia to bring audiences an extraordinary musical experience. A native of Iran, Lily's music is infused with a unique blend of technical precision and passionate musicality that help to tell her life story. From her early life in Tehran, daughter of a family with ancient roots in the northern region of Azerbaijan, to becoming the first woman in the world to be awarded the degree of Doctor of Music in guitar performance, Lily's passion for the instrument shows up in a fresh approach to the standard classical guitar repertoire, as well as music that is new and different. Lily is a tenured professor and head of the guitar program at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. She has arranged, published and recorded music for the guitar, and regularly conducts guitar master classes in conjunction with her touring and during summers in Iran. The USM School of Music is pleased to host both a masterclass where USM students will perform for a critical review by Ms. Afshar, as well as a full length concert the next evening.
