Public Workshop Of BORDEN: A New Musical To Perform At Downtown Arts Center

Tickets are now on sale for the highly anticipated public workshop presentation of BORDEN: A New Musical, presented as part of the 2026 Voices HEaRd Women's Theatre Festival by Voices Amplified.

Created by Lexington native and New York-based writer Cavan Hendron, BORDEN centers on the complex relationship between sisters Lizzie and Emma Borden in the days before and after the infamous 1892 murders that changed American history forever. Rather than retelling the case through sensationalism, the musical explores loyalty, grief, identity, and the cost of loving someone without limits.

The workshop marks a major next step in the musical's development following its acclaimed 2024 industry presentation in New York City. Audiences in Lexington will have the rare opportunity to experience the show during its development process before its next stage.

The production is being developed in collaboration with acclaimed author and leading Lizzie Borden historian Cara Robertson, who serves as Dramaturg and Historical Advisor on the project. Robertson is the author of the critically acclaimed The Trial of Lizzie Borden and is widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on the case. She will participate in a special public talkback following the June 11 performance alongside members of the creative team.

BORDEN features a creative team led by Hendron alongside co-book writer Aaron Roitman, composer Matthew Nassida, lyricists Hendron and Nassida, director Neeta Thadani, and creative producer Audrey Belle Adams.

The workshop will take place June 11-13, 2026 at the Downtown Arts Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Tickets can be purchased on Ovationtix website.

In addition to the performances, attendees will also have the opportunity to attend an exclusive private reception hosted at the historic Mary Todd Lincoln House on Saturday, June 13 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. The reception will include refreshments, conversation with the creative team and Cara Robertson, and a unique opportunity to celebrate the development of the musical in one of Lexington's most iconic historic locations. Space for the reception is limited.
