Aliza Barzilay, Executive Director of the 38-year-old Westside Center for Independent Living (WCIL), said the organization's Associates raised $12,000 at a recent Literary Tea and Membership Party with Guest Author and Speaker, the legendary Actor, Film Director, Producer, Writer and Comedian, Carl Reiner, held at the Los Angeles home of member Betty Deutsch. Sixty guests attended the afternoon catered holiday luncheon.

Reiner read from his latest books, "Just Desserts, A Novellelah" and "Tell Me Another Scary Story...But Not TOO Scary!" and explained the genesis for each. During the course of the afternoon Reiner also reminisced about how his career began in New York, serving in the Air Force during World War II, working with Sid Caeser on "Your Show of Shows," creating "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and working with his dear friend and colleague, Mel Brooks, whom will be honored in a national telecast of The 2009 Kennedy Center Honors later this month, which Reiner also participated in.

The Westside Center for Independent Living is a non-residential center dedicated to empowering all people with disabilities so that they achieve and maintain self-sufficient and productive lives.
