According to Adoption at the Movies founder Addison Cooper, "These awards exist to honor and celebrate the films that serve the adoption community by positively portraying adoption or adoptive families - and also those films that are useful to therapeutically-minded parents because of how well they capture emotion and family connection." The Adoption at the Movies Awards are read by thousands of adoptive families each year. In 2015,Big Hero 6 was awarded both the "Picture of the Year" and "Best Animated Movie." Director Don Hall stated, "This film was a true labor of love for everyone involved, and my heart swells with pride anytime our collected efforts are recognized. It is especially meaningful to me, as the father of an adopted child, to be honored in this way. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you."

In 2016, Inside Out won "Picture of the Year" for its immense use to families of kids who have been through challenges.
