Terri White Performs 'From Blues to Broadway' at Newman Theater Today

By:

Broadway's Terri White will perform "From Blues To Broadway" at the Arthur Newman Theater in the Joslyn Center today, September 1, 2013 at 2 PM. Considered 'a living legend' in the New York music world, known for her show-stopping, scene-stealing performances, Terri toured as a toddler with her families song and dance act - her specialty was "Me And My Shadow" with her father. As a young lady she headlined at NYC cabaret rooms like 88's, Rose's Turn, and The Duplex. In 1978, her run as understudy to Nell Carter in Ain't Misbehavin' resulted in her going on for an unheard of 112 performances. She later replaced Nell in the 1988 revival but not before her big break playing, strangely enough, octogenarian Joice Heth in the original 1980 production of Barnum. Other shows include: Showboat, Nunsense I & II, Damn Yankees, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Little Shop Of Horrors, and Stepping Out at Radio City with close friend Liza Minnelli and many more, garnering numerous awards and nominations along the way.
Check her out in some of the videow below!
A rough patch left her homeless at sixty years old when one midnight, a NYPD officer discovered a woman on a park bench who looked familiar and remember her as someone he'd seen many times performing in Greenwich Village clubs. After a few calls she was rescued, and before you knew it she was ripping the roof off of the St. James Theater singing "Necessity" in a 2009 revival of Finian's Rainbow. The coveted role of Mama Morton followed in the revival of Chicago that led to the 2011 revival of Follies, leading the song and tap number "Who's That Woman" as Stella Deems along side Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell and Elaine Paige at The Kennedy Center.
"From Blues To Broadway" includes stories from Terri's career with songs from her many roles and others like "Home" from The Wiz, "I Am Changing" from Dreamgirls with piano accompaniment by Brian Miller. Presented by Les Michaels as part of the Sundays In Summer Cabaret Series at the Arthur Newman Theater located in The Joslyn Center, 73750 Catalina Way in Palm Desert. Show time on Sunday, September 1st is 2 PM and tickets are a bargain at $10 each, cash only, and available at the box office, which opens at 1 PM before the show. For any questions please call 760-325-2731.
