SCR Announces Cast And Creative Team For GOLDFISH 3/15-4/5

South Coast Repertory today announced the cast and creative team for the World Premiere of Goldfish, a life-affirming comedy about love lost and found written by John Kolvenbach. Commissioned by SCR and directed by Loretta Greco, Goldfish will run from March 15 through April 5, 2009 on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Low-priced previews are available from March 15 through March 19. Opening night is March 20. Goldfish tells the tale of two off-beat college students who fall surprisingly in love. Lucy's loquacious. Albert's solitary. But Lucy persists, and to his amazement, sweeps him off his feet. Then problems develop: namely, her mother and his father. Dealing with eccentric parents stretches the power of love to its limits and sends Albert and Lucy on an imaginative search for a happy ending.

From Chicago to New York to London, where the Evening Standard praised his "robust humor and bursts of poetic lyricism," John Kolvenbach is one of today's most sought-after playwrights. He is the author of Love Song, on an average day, Gizmo Love, Fabuloso and most recently, Mrs. Whitney. Love Song premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company directed by Austin Pendelton and went on to the West End, where it was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The London production was directed by John Crowley, with Neve Campbell, Cillian Murphy, Kristen Johnston and Michael McKean. on an average day ran at the Comedy Theatre on the West End in 2002, with Woody Harrelson and Kyle MacLachlan, also directed by John Crowley.

Loretta Greco returns to SCR where she directed the staged reading of Goldfish at last year's Pacific Playwrights Festival, and previously Nilo Cruz's Two Sisters and a Piano. She is the newly appointed artistic director of the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. Her New York premieres include Tracey Scott Wilson's The Story, the OBIE Award-winning Lackawanna Blues by Ruben Santiago Hudson and Two Sisters and a Piano at The Public Theater; Emily Mann's Meshugah at Naked Angels Theater Company; Laura Cahill's Mercy at Vineyard Theatre; and Nilo Cruz's A Park in Our House at New York Theatre Workshop. Greco also directed the national tour of Emily Mann's Having Our Say as well as the play's international premiere at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The cast of Goldfish features Tasso Feldman (Albert), Joan McMurtrey (Margaret), Conor O'Farrell (Leo) and Kate Rylie (Lucy).

The creative team includes Myung Hee Cho (set design), Alex Jaeger (costume design), Lonnie Rafael Alcaraz (lighting design), Michael Hooker (sound design), John Glore (dramaturg) and Julie Haber (stage manager).

Inside the Season is a series of interactive classes that provide a comprehensive inside look at the theatrical production process. Each two-hour class is led by School and Community Programs Director Linda Sullivan Baity and features creative personnel from South Coast Repertory's current production. Inside the Season is offered on select Saturday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 each and can be purchased by calling the Box Office at (714) 708-5555. Performances begin on March 15 and continue through April 5. Ticket prices range from $20 to $64. Low-priced preview performances are available from March 15-19. Performance times: Previews: Sunday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m., and Tuesday, March 17, Wednesday, March 18 and Thursday, March 19 at 7:45 p.m. Regular Performances: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:45 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Discounts are available for full-time students, patrons 25 years of age and under, educators, seniors and groups of 15 or more. There will be a "Pay-What-You-Will" performance on Saturday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. ($10 minimum) and an ASL-interpreted performance on Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m.
