REDCAT Presents GOB SQUAD: CREATION (PICTURES FOR DORIAN)

By:

REDCAT Presents GOB SQUAD: CREATION (PICTURES FOR DORIAN) ImageREDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, presents the ingenious and charming British-German art collective Gob Squad, in a new production developed with six Los Angeles performers, Creation (Pictures for Dorian), Thursday October 18 to Sunday October 22, 2018.

Presented in partnership with Center Theater Group.

Gob Squad members have spent the last 25 years onstage, growing old together. Now well and truly middle-aged, they are inviting a diverse group of local performers-three who are a generation younger, and three a generation older than themselves-to answer the questions of beauty, morality, and power raised by Oscar Wilde's never-aging character Dorian Gray, and to playfully ask why they all so crave the eye of the beholder.

Gob Squad shrewdly mixes performance and impromptu video to elevate the banality of everyday life into soaring artistic experiences. Every night is different when they draw inspiration from six local citizens who perform with them in a uniquely Los Angeles version of their latest acclaimed production.

Invited Los Angeles Guest Performers include dancer/choreographer Mallory Fabian, actor/performance artist Nic Prior, actress/model Natasha Liu, as well as, LA stage veterans Dan Guerrero (¡Gaytino!), Tina Preston and Amentha Dymally.

The group has wowed REDCAT audiences with their previous works Western Society, Super Night Shot and Kitchen. They use wit and wry humor as they "explore the point where theater meets art, media and real life."

Gob Squad place our work at the heart of urban life - in houses, shops, underground stations, car parks, hotels or directly on the street, as well as in theaters and galleries. Everyday life and magic, banality and utopia, reality and entertainment are all set on a collision course and the audience are often asked to step beyond their traditional role as passive spectators and bear witness to the results. Gob Squad make performances and videos which search for beauty in the everyday, and look for words of wisdom from a passing stranger.

The company was started in Nottingham in 1994 and is now primarily based in Berlin, although they regularly make and present work in the UK. Their work is regularly shown throughout Europe, and toured to all the continents, apart from Antarctica.

As an artists collective, the seven core members work collaboratively on concept, direction and performance of work. Other artists, performers and technicians are invited to collaborate on particular projects.

The current Gob Squad line-up is Johanna Freiburg, Sean Patten, Sharon Smith, Berit Stumpf, Sarah Thom, Bastian Trost and Simon Will.
