Louie Cruz Beltran to Headline 24th Street Theatre's Free Dia de los Muertos Block Party, 11/2
By: Tyler Peterson
Louie Cruz Beltran and his Latin Jazz Orchestra will headline 24th STreet Theatre's free, annual Dia de los Muertos block party on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Celebrate the joyous tradition of Mexico's Day of the Dead 24th STreet style, with music, dance, homemade tamales, face painting, crafts booths and a graveyard where families can make their own altars for their departed loved ones. "This is a really special event because it brings the local community together every year," says 24th STreet Theatre artistic director Debbie Devine. "Residents of all ages participate. They cook, bake, decorate, run the booths - or just come down to have fun and enjoy. We close down the theater parking lot and turn it into a beautiful, colorful cemetery." In addition to Beltran, entertainment will include locally-based mariachi bands and folklorico troupes. The festivities begin early, with two free Community Arts Workshops on Saturday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 25, each from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. where the public is invited to help create paper flowers, luminarias, and other traditional arts and crafts in preparation for the big event - no experience necessary, all are welcome.
