Little Fish Theatre Presents THE DOLL, Now thru 5/21

By:

Little Fish Theatre today announced the opening of the next show of its fourteenth season, The Doll, a fun, off-beat comedy written by celebrated Croatian writer Miro Gavran. Gavran is a highly successful playwright, both in the US and abroad. His works have been translated into 35 languages and seen by nearly 3 million theatre-goers. He is the only living dramatist in Europe to have a theatre festival devoted solely to his plays outside his/her homeland. The Gavranfest has been held in Slovakia since 2003. Little Fish was proud to present another of his plays My Wife's Husband to sell-out success in 2011.

When Marko's girlfriend leaves him because of his fear of children and commitment, he finds himself lonely. Rather than face the difficulties of life with a real woman, he enters a competition to win a prototype android doll. Stella is programmed to make him happy in every way, but despite her best efforts he learns something he didn't expect. This play asks some intriguing questions. Can even the most perfect technology replace imperfect yet honest human relationships? Is it selfish to expect perfection from those around us when we can't provide the same?

"I think this play has a lot to offer audiences," says director Jim Rice. "On the surface it's a simple quirky play, but it is also very thought provoking. Especially in an era when the sterilized comfort that technology can provide tempts us to abandon the uncertainty of human relationships." Rice is one of Little Fish's finest directors and performers. Most recently, he has appeared onstage to great acclaim as Helmuth Rode in Taking Sides. Some of his recent directing works include this years Pick of the Vine, Present Laughter and Grace and Glorie. Joining him are two very accomplished actors who will be new to Little Fish audiences, John Byrd and Analeis Lorig.

The Doll will open tonight, April 30th and run Thursdays at 8pm through May 21st. Wednesday performances are scheduled for 8pm on May 13th and 20th with two Sunday matinees at 2pm on May 3rd and 10th. After the Sunday May 3rd performance the creative team will be available for post-show discussion with the audience for 10 -15 minutes.

Founded in 2002, Little Fish Theatre presents classic and contemporary plays in an intimate setting on Centre Street in downtown San Pedro. Producing eleven plays each year for a one-room 65-seat venue, Little Fish delivers the quintessential close-up theatrical experience, where audience and performers share space and sight-lines, making for eruptive laughter, highly-charged action and palpable emotion.
