LA Theatre Works Airs MR. RICKEY CALLS A MEETING 10/17

This weekend, beginning Saturday, October 17, L.A. Theatre Works will air Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting by Ed Schmidt, starring Edward Asner, David Downing, Tommy Hicks, Carl Lumbly, Sterling Macer, Charlie Robinson and Rugg Williams. The broadcast can be heard locally in Southern California on Saturday from 10 pm to midnight on 89.3 FM KPCC, and can also be streamed on demand at http://www.latw.org/.

Branch Rickey, the wily manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, summons heavyweight champion Joe Louis, tap star Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and actor Paul Robeson to gain to their support when he taps Jackie Robinson as the Major League first black ballplayer. But a power struggles ensues when Robeson questions Rickey's plan to integrate white baseball. The broadcast includes two interviews: one with major league pitcher Al Downing, who began playing with the New York Yankees in 1961 and became the team's first African-American starting pitcher; and the other with Lee Lowenfish, author of "Branch Rickey: Baseball's Ferocious Gentleman."

L.A.
