LA Phil's Toyota Symphonies for Youth Concerts Begin 2014/15 Season at Walt Disney Concert Hall

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's 2014/15 Toyota Symphonies for Youth (TSFY) concert series at Walt Disney Concert Hall begins on Saturday, October 18, and Saturday, October 25, at 11 a.m., with "The Organ: Stops, Keys, Pedals and Pipes!" - two performances of an original concert production that celebrates the tenth birthday of the Walt Disney Concert Hall's pipe organ. Through storytelling and performance, the production will explore the mechanics of the pipe organ, and showcase its versatility as a solo and accompanying instrument. Audiences will be led through these discoveries by a "poetic plumber" who enters the concert hall with a work order to "fix the pipes," and leaves with a full appreciation for the power and finesse of the instrument.

The concert will feature LA Phil keyboardist Joanne Pearce Martin, both on the organ and in action as she acts alongside the theater artist. Dudamel Fellow Christian Kluxen will conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic in excerpts from Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3.

The Toyota Symphonies for Youth series features eight concerts created especially for children age five to eleven and their families. These multi-disciplinary concerts showcase the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and introduce the world of classical music to children through imaginative and original storytelling in a theatrical setting. Before every concert, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes a musical playground with hands-on art making, musical activities, dance, and storytelling or theater. Workshops take place in the lobby spaces one hour prior to the performance.

The TSFY series continues on Saturday, December 6, and Saturday, December 13, with "Jazz and the Orchestra" which will explore the connections and collaborations between orchestral music and America's national music, Jazz. This dynamic concert will feature John Beasley's MONK'estra playing alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic and musicians from Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). This marks YOLA's debut appearance on the series.

On Saturday, February 7, and Saturday, February 14, 2015, Ravel's Bolero is featured in "Bolero: Ravel's Dance for Orchestra" - a program that explores the composer's impeccable style and infectious rhythms, and his love for reinventing dance movements.

The 2014/15 TSFY series concludes on Saturday, April 25, and Saturday, May 2, 2015 with one of the most internationally revered pieces that introduces kids to the orchestra, Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, in a story of a boy, his forest friends, and a scary wolf.
