LA Philharmonic to Feature Works of Adams, Bernstein, Beethoven, and Mahler

By: Jan. 03, 2011

Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic begin the new year with a very busy and ambitious month of January.

Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall in a program that includes Adams' Slonimsky's Earbox, Bernstein's Symphony No. 1, "Jeremiah" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, January 6 - 9, 2011; and conducts Mahler's Symphony No. 9 with the LA Phil, January 13 - 15, 2011.

The January 9 performance marks the LA Phil's first ever live symphony performance series broadcast in over 450 movie theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Hosted by actress/singer/stage star Vanessa Williams, LA Phil LIVE with Gustavo Dudamel from Walt Disney Concert Hall features up-close and dramatic views of Dudamel and the orchestra in action, captured with multiple high definition cameras and in breathtaking 5.1 digital surround sound. Each broadcast transports audiences behind the music for an insider's look at the LA Phil via the "backstage pass" feature, which includes live behind-the-scenes interviews, rehearsal footage and a post-concert Q&A. The remaining concert broadcasts include an all-Tchaikovsky program interspersed with performances by actors reading related Shakespeare texts (March 13, 2011) and an all-Brahms program (June 5, 2011).

On Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11:35 p.m. Dudamel guests on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, making his first appearance on the national late-night program and his late night television debut.

To conclude the month of January, Dudamel and the LA Phil embark upon their first European tour together (January 21 - February 5, 2011) visiting Lisbon, Madrid, Cologne, London, Paris, Budapest and Vienna, performing the aforementioned Adams, Bernstein and Beethoven program, as well as Mahler's Symphony No. 9.
