James Anthony Tyler Recipient Of 2018 Horton Foote Playwriting Award ImageThe Dramatists Guild of America is proud to announce they will present the 2018 Horton Foote Playwriting Award to playwright James Anthony Tyler at the Dramatists Guild's awards presentations in 2018. This year's award finalist is Fernanda Coppel. The Richenthal Foundation is again sponsoring the award.

This playwriting award, in its third year, will bestow $25,000 on a dramatist whose work seeks to plumb the ineffable nature of being human. The award is named after the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Oscar-winning, and Tony-nominated playwright Horton Foote, who passed away in 2009. Due to Foote's longtime association with the Dramatists Guild, the award is administered by the Dramatists Guild Foundation - the first two recipients of the award were Stephen Karam and Rajiv Joseph.

James Anthony Tyler was a 2014-2015 Dramatists Guild Fellow. His plays include Some Old Black Man (Berkshire Playwrights Lab, upcoming NYC premiere in February, 2018), Dolphins and Sharks (LAByrinth Theater Company and Finborough Theatre in London), and Artney Jackson (The New Black Fest). He has received a Theatre Masters Visionary Playwrights Award, The Playwrights' Center's Many Voices Fellowship and a Working Farm Writers Group Residency at Space on Ryder Farm. Tyler has an MFA from Howard University and NYU, and is a 2017 graduate of Juilliard.

Fernanda Coppel (finalist): Fernanda Coppel's play King Liz received its world premiere at Second Stage Theatre and is being developed for Showtime. Her work has won the Asuncion Queer Latino Festival at Pregones Theater, the HOLA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting, and the Helen Merrill Award. Fernanda's play Chimichangas and Zoloft premiered at the Atlantic Theater and is published by Samuel French. She was a Playwriting Fellow at Juilliard and received her MFA from NYU.

The Horton Foote Playwriting Award will be presented in 2018, at a location to be announced. The Guild's other awards, including the Hull-Warriner Award, the Frederick Loewe Award, and the Flora Roberts Award, will also be announced at a later date.
