INTO THE WOODS, SEVEN YEAR ITCH & More Set for New Village Arts' 10th Season

New Village Arts, Carlsbad's award-winning, professional theatre is very proud to announce its Tenth Season. This will be NVA's biggest season ever, with eight full productions, NVA's first musical and two local premieres. Over the past nine seasons, NVA has established itself as one of the most important mid-sized theatres in San Diego, producing over 40 highly acclaimed productions, including a world-premiere holiday show, multiple regional and local premieres, unforgettable American and world classics, the intense work of Sam Shepard and the popular FREE Shakespeare in the Park. New Village Arts honors that history in Season 10 and introduces some exciting new traditions for North County, by selecting shows that honor the history of the company, recognize the amazing current growth and give an intriguing glimpse into the future. All of the plays take us on an adventure - into growing up, learning about love and loss and celebrating the power of the human soul.

Season 10 continues with a regional premiere straight out of Labyrinth Theatre in New York. SWEET STORM, by Scott Hudson, takes place in Florida in 1960 during a ferociously approaching storm. Ruthie and Bo, two newlyweds, enter their honeymoon suite in the sky, a treehouse which is a romantic gesture from the young groom to his bride. Bo's expectations of living happily ever after in the sky are soon grounded by Ruthie's realization that marriage comes with many unforeseen - and frightening - challenges. The two lovers struggle to fortify themselves against forces both inside and outside. This is a funny, powerful, and intimate love story to challenge our perceptions of marriage, faith, and love. Featuring Ensemble Member Adam Brick with Kelly Iversen, SWEET STORM will mark the directing debut of Ensemble Member Daren Scott. The New York Times raves "SWEET STORM stays with you like the freshness following a summer cloudburst." SWEET STORM will run April 21 - May 15, 2011 with opening night on April 23 at 8 PM.

New Village Arts will finish Season 10 with what is arguably the greatest American play ever written, Arthur Miller's DEATH OF A SALESMAN, directed by Executive Artistic Director Kristianne Kurner and featuring Ensemble Member Jack Missett as Willy Loman. Written in 1949, DEATH OF A SALESMAN won both the Tony and the Pulitzer and quickly became one of the most important and influential American plays. The story considers one ordinary man's struggle to be extraordinary in life. What defines success? How far will a person go to achieve the American dream? A thrilling work of deep and revealing beauty that remains one of the most profound classic dramas of the American theatre. Also joining the cast are Ensemble Members Dana Case as Linda and John DeCarlo as Biff, with Greg Wittman as Happy. "I can't imagine a better way to celebrate Season 10 than by directing DEATH OF A SALESMAN. Jack Missett has been with NVA from the very beginning, and I am thrilled to see what he will do with the character of Willy Loman." DEATH OF A SALESMAN will run June 9 - July 3, 2011 with opening night on June 11 at 8 PM.

For Season Ten, New Village Arts will continue its tradition of making the two preview performances of each show Pay-What-You-Can. NVA strongly believes in making theatre accessible to all, and is proud to offer this opportunity to our community. Once Upon a Time...a baker and his wife embark on a quest into the woods, to fulfill the witch next door's request and lift a curse that has kept them from having a child. Along the way, they meet Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), Cinderella, two handsome princes and a motley assortment of other characters, all on quests of their own. Stephen Sondheim's enormously popular musical answers the question of what really happens after "happily ever after" and includes some of the most beautiful songs in the musical theatre canon, including "Giants in the Sky", "Children Will Listen" and "No One Is Alone."
