First Poet Laureate of L.A. & More Set for PROPERTIES OF SILENCE Salon Series at Pasadena Playhouse

By:

Poetry readings, performances, panels and discussions paying tribute to 17th century poet and feminist writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz make up the "Post-Silence" Salon Series set to follow each performance of About... Productions' original drama Properties of Silence. Kicking off the series, Red Hen Press presents poets Eloise Klein Healy (first Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, 2012), Jessica Piazza and Terry Wolverton on Feb. 28. All performances and Salon Series events take place at The Carrie Hamilton Theatre at The Pasadena Playhouse.

Other Salon Series highlights include a Shattered Silence panel featuring Mama's Hot Tamales and Mama's Merging Markets founder Sandi Romero and Los Angeles County Arts Commission director of communications and marketing director Leticia Rhi Buckley on March 1; performances by vocalist Julie Adler, poet Eve Wood and musician/actor Ellen Burr on March 7; scholar Barbara Fuchs, PhD on March 14; and writer/performer/activist Karen Anzoategui on March 21.

Red Hen Press will present poets Nicelle Davis, Laurel Ann Bogen and Amy Uyematsu on March 12, and Gail Wronsky and Alicia Portnoy on March 20.

Mujeres de Maiz will present poets Iris de Anda, Felicia Montes, Rebecca Gonzales and Xitlalic Gujosa Osuna on March 15, and poets/writers Las Lunas Locas on March 26.

For a complete list of "Post-Silence" Salon Series events, visit www.aboutpd.org.

In the play Properties of Silence, which precedes each "Post-Silence" Salon Series event, poetry, science and history meld as famed 17th century poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz crosses paths with a contemporary realtor and her pool contractor husband in a multi-layered dreamscape. Black and white video by Janice Tanaka emulates the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema to underscore Sor Juana's life story, and music is composed by vocal artist Julie Adler. Original prints created by artists from the first Maestra Atelier at Self Help Graphics & Art in tribute to Sor Juana will be displayed in The Carrie Hamilton Theatre lobby.

Properties of Silence and the "Post-Silence" Salon Series take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. from Feb. 28 through March 29, with one weekday matinee on Wednesday, March 25 at 2 p.m. (dark Sunday, March 22). Tickets are $30, except March 8 which is a benefit performance and for which tickets are $60. Student tickets (with valid ID) are $15 (except March 8). The Carrie Hamilton Theatre at The Pasadena Playhouse is located at 39 S. El Molino Ave., 2nd Floor, Pasadena CA 91101. For reservations and information, call (626) 396-0920 or visit www.aboutpd.org.
