Deborah Asiimwe's COOKING OIL to Make US Premiere at ATX, 6/6-9
COOKING OIL, written by award-winning Ugandan playwright Deborah Asiimwe, makes its US premiere under the direction of Fulbright Fellow Emily Mendelsohn June 6-9, 2013 at ATX / Arts + Innovation Complex.
The project features an international cast from Kampala, Kigali, and Los Angeles, and revolves around local/global issues of foreign aid, women's education, and the role of the arts in social change. The play holds vibrant images from East Africa, brought to life with traditional and contemporary music, chant, dance, and material of aid. Authentic US Aid cans drum the rhythm of the performance; oil drips slowly from a wheelbarrow suspended from the ceiling. Mendelsohn and Asiimwe interrogate in/dependence and the gaze at a suffering Other as our storytellers face their own complicity in an endless cycle of corruption.
Performances by: Loren Fenton, Samuel Kamanzi, Esther Lutaaya, Kaya Mukasa, Tonny Muwangala, Sharon Wang, and Renell White.
Each performance will include a brief post-show conversation around the topics of the play, featuring local community leaders.
COOKING OIL runs Thursday-Sunday at 8:00pm, and Saturday & Sunday at 2:00pm.
