Nuestra Señora de las Nubes, directed by Arturo Díaz de Sandy, written by Ecuadorian playwright Aristides Vargas. In addition to Nuestra Señora de las Nubes , we'll be partnering with the Mexican Government to co-produce another show in collaboration with famed Ecuadorian playwright/director Aristides Vargas. And we'll be taking El Ogrito to El Salvador, Colombia, and Mexico this year in addition to taking it to Santa Barbara County. Our Teatro Nuevo Latino Theatre Initiative is having a big year in 2010!

La obra transcurre en un lugar sin nombre en dónde se encuentran dos personajes cuyo único patrimonio material es una maleta. Entablan una relación de amistad al descubrir que son originarios de un mismo pueblo: Nuestra señora de las nubes.

Enamorados y marginados del mismo país que los echó, estas dos almas recrean su mundo olvidado y sus habitantes a través de la poesía, de las canciones y de la fantasía.

No se habla sobre lo evidente del exilio, se habla de las personas que están fuera de sí, personas que llevan como único equipaje el recuerdo, y una buena dosis de imaginación para inventar ese pasado que no contiene ya su maleta; y así en sus recuerdos borrosos y directos, muchas veces, aparecen los hechos, anécdotas de un pueblo, que como cualquier otro, pasa de lo ridículo y pintoresco hasta lo más terrible y perverso.

Desfilan personajes que nos traen a la memoria los arquetipos de una comunidad propia de nuestra forma cultural de vida. Pero esta historia, deja filtrar su parte gruesa y profunda: el imperio de los opresores que pretenden aplastar al que se rebela. La sombra de las dictaduras y la censura. La inocencia burlada. La locura y lo cuerdo social. Lo pintoresco de anécdotas amorosas. La tiranía y el desorden.

Entre recuerdos irán construyendo un nuevo territorio que les permita refundar una nueva vida en algún lugar desconocido al que habrá que inventar, para seguir creyendo y paradójicamente, quizás, en algún otro tiempo, añorar y recordar.

Nuestra Señora de las Nubes (subtitled as an 'exercise on exile') tells the story of the encounters of two political exiles who meet in a nondescript place and time to share memories of their homeland, an ethereal, fictional town called Nuestra Señora de las Nubes (Our Lady of the Clouds). Constantly alternating between present realities and past memories, and with two pieces of luggage as sole belongings, the characters share anecdotes of their experience as exiles, their dreams, needs, frustrations, desires, loves, oblivions and memories.

A town that only exists in the memory of expatriates, Nuestra Señora maps the experience of diaspora as an existential condition of permanent uprootedness, in this case inspired by the history of Latin American exile. Exile, in this work, becomes not only the physical loss of one's homeland, but the erosion of one's ability to remain inside one's own memories. Memory as a sort of joint venture, then, allows for the construction of a new territory to belong to, a new homeland of affect where to survive, yearn and remember.
