Formed in 1968, the Atlantic Winds Symphony is the oldest full professional concert band on Long Island. The Atlantic Winds Symphony prides itself on using only Long Island musicians. They receive funding from the New York State Council of the Arts and the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Development. The Symphony has performed throughout Long Island, New York City and Westchester Counties for summer programs at parks as well as numerous private engagements. The organization made its premiere Carnegie Hall performance on March 22, 1998.Their parks performances have included Morgan Park and Eisenhower Park in Nassau country and as far east as Westhampton and Quogue in Suffolk County. The purpose of the organization is to develop a love and appreciation for the concert band as a musical performing medium and to provide concerts, on a not-for-profit basis for the people of Long Island in addition to the members’ pursuit of artistic excellence.

The October 14, 2012 program is titled “American Storm and Sunshine” featuring the works of American composers. Featured selections include John Philip Sousa’s little known work titled “The Kaffir on the Karroo,” Howard Hanson’s “Merry Mount Suite” and “The Red Pony” by Aaron Copland.
