Student Blog: Bringing in the New Year

If you have read my previous blog posts, you will know that I love making resolutions and goals for myself. Even if I don't accomplish everything that I put in my list, I love the feeling of acknowledging what I want to work on and how I wish to better myself. It helps to keep me focused on what is in front of me. I always try to make a resolutions/goals list at the beginning of every calendar year, and school year, to help me get excited about the year in front of me.

I wanted to share some of my new year's resolutions for 2022, including both personal and artistic goals:

1. Take more risks- I want to work on putting myself out there more, in both theatre and my regular life. I have a tendency to play things safe, in fear of embarrassment or failure. I want to make bold choices and give myself the chance to take up space and attention.

2. STOP PROCRASTINATING- This resolution is on my list every year. You think that it would get easier and I would actually accomplish this goal, but I simply cannot. However, I keep it on my list as a reminder that I need to work on improving my procrastination problem and stay focused on my work.

3. Try new things- I love to try new things like foods or activities, but I know that I definitely want to get better at it. Life is too short to be repeating things all the time and to not branch out and explore more. I want to try new things in the theatre industry, like working behind the scenes in costumes, tech, lighting design, sound, etc. I have gotten a lot of experience thus far with performing onstage that I now would like to explore more areas of the industry.

4. Get my splits!- This one may sound silly, but I would really like to work towards getting both my left and right splits. I love to dance but stretching has always been a struggle for me. I want to work on improving my flexibility and leg extensions overall.

5. Read more plays- There are so many plays out in the world and I think it is mandatory for me to continue exploring and reading them. I have only barely cracked the surface on my knowledge of plays that I want to work towards reading more this year.

6. Drink more water.- I don't think I need to explain this one. If anyone has any tips on how to drink more water, please let me know. The struggle is real.

7. Adopt an attitude of gratitude.- I have been working a lot this past year on affirmations and gratitude, as there is always so much to be grateful for both academically and personally. I want to continue journaling my affirmations and what I am grateful for and find new ways to practice gratitude.

I for one am so excited to see what this new year will bring. Hopefully it will be a year full of learning, happiness, laughter, safety, and many fun memories.
