Bay Street Theatre is pleased to announce a free screening and discussion of the documentary CASINO JACK AND THE UNITED STATES OF MONEY (Rated R), will take place on Saturday, January 29 at 3 pm (doors open at 2:30 pm). The documentary was written and directed by Alex Gibney. After the screening there will be a discussion of the issues, including an interview with Congressman Tim Bishop and a question and answer session.

The Social Action Campaign for this film highlights the corruptive role of money in politics with initiatives designed to educate citizens about their elected officials ties to special interest groups and provide tools to create a movement to bring real and meaningful campaign finance reform. Through the story of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the documentary illuminates how politicians' desperate efforts to get elected and the billions of dollars it costs, may be undermining the basic principles of American democracy. Much of the money that flows through U.S. politics is used to purchase influence. Corporations, industry groups, labor unions and single-issue organizations together spend billions of dollars each year to gain access to decision-makers in government, all in an attempt to influence their thinking. Are your representatives affected?

The screening and discussion is sponsored by SunLightFoundation.com and FixCongressFirst.org, both bipartisan and looking for a government that is transparent and truly open and accountable to all citizens; as well as looking for a permanent solution to the pervasive-corruptive influence of money in politics through an Amendment to the Constitution. The event was coordinated by Michael T. Clarjen-Arconada.
