Seeing a show like Rodgers and Hammersteins' "The Sound Of Music" is nothing short of fulfilling. Director Danny Gorman and Musical Director Cara Brown of the Smithtown Performing Arts Center have splendidly put together an amazing cast to present this timeless, relevant story based on the memoirs of Maria Augusta Trapp.

The most impressive were the children of the cast, including Gabriella Boresi (Gretl), Annalyse Sabia (Marta), Kellie Rooney (Brigitta), Jack Murphy (Kurt), Leighann Guardino (Louisa), Dean Cestari (Friedrich), and DeAnna Mato (Liesl).

Jennifer Hope was wonderful as Maria Rainer. Her performance of "My Favorite Things" with Joy Tepedino (as The Mother Abbess) left me smiling ear to ear when it ended. Her portrayal of Maria's vulnerable side was just as convincing. Michael Bertolini was also great as Captain Von Trapp. As he had his first dance with Maria, their love was certain.

Equally impressive was the set, designed by Tim Golebiewski, who made great use of the space.  The double level stage included Maria's bedroom suite on top with the grand living room on the bottom. Church scenes were played in front of swing walls.

Throughout the production, the strength and determination of the Von Trapp family shines through even the most difficult moments. This cast is a great cast to see as they seem like a real family. They all sound fantastic not only individually, but together as well. Most importantly they accomplish telling a story that is generations old very well.

Playing through January 29th, "The Sound Of Music" is presented by the Smithtown Performing Arts Center of Smithtown, Long Island, NY.
