Review: Theatre Three's GODSPELL

By:

As often as Godspell is presented, I always encourage seeing it again particularly when you have a cast as superb as Theatre Three's. Under the marvelous direction of Artistic Director Jeffrey Sanzel, the stunning company is exemplary for the perfect execution of this important story that is told time and time again.

Premiering in 1971 and created by John-Michael Tebelak (Book) and Stephen Schwartz (Score), the tale transforms parables from the Bible into lessons via modern songs, music, and dance. To add to the contemporary take, there are only two named characters in the show with the rest of the cast going by their real name.

Mr. Sanzel's talented company is brilliantly headed up by Theatre Three vets Hans Paul Hendrickson as Jesus and Patrick O'Brien as John the Baptist/Judas. These men give wonderful performances as each of them - and the cast - has their moments to shine as each cast member is assigned a song in the score. The enthusiastic audience is particularly receptive to the exquisite version of the popular "Day By Day" performed by Amanda Geraci, another vet of the Port Jefferson venue.

Another highlight is the stellar orchestra that sits on stage with the cast. Led by Theatre Three staple Steve McCoy, the band includes John Dericco on guitar, Rob Curry on bass, and Don Larsen on drums/percussion. It is truly enjoyable to watch the band interacting with the cast on occasions. Additionally, the set is most interesting. It seems Randall Parson's put together a hodgepodge of set pieces and makes them work really well; rustic yet justly complements Marquez Stewart's choreography. It is enhanced beautifully by Robert W. Henderson, Jr and Randal Parsons calico costumes.

And so, Theatre Three's incarnation of the classic Godspell is certainly another hit. If you have seen it, I "beseech thee" to see it again. The excellent, energetic company makes this a delightful night of theatre.
